Downtown planter removal project begins June 22; Periodic parking space and street closures to occur

Beginning June 22, the City of Mt. Pleasant will remove the 42 round cement planters along the streets of downtown. Planters on Main Street will be removed first, followed by those on Broadway Street. Periodic parking space and street closures will occur throughout the project to accommodate the necessary equipment.

After the planters are removed, spaces will be filled with turf, concrete or brick pavers, depending on the location.

The project will conclude July 13.

Saturday Farmers’ Market moves to Michigan Street for 2018 season

The Mt. Pleasant Farmers’ Market is known for its fresh fruits and vegetables, and this summer, the Saturday Market will also be known for its fresh, new space!

With the support of Real Food Grows, the 2018 Saturday Farmers’ Market is moving to Michigan Street near the Main Street intersection downtown Mt. Pleasant. Open from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturdays beginning June 30, customers will find a tasty selection of locally-grown foods, colorful plants, homemade baked goods and more.

“Mt. Pleasant Parks and Recreation is excited to bring the Mt. Pleasant Farmers’ Market to a new downtown spot on Saturdays this summer that is both highly visible and easy for shoppers to access,” said Mt. Pleasant Farmers’ Market Manager Carol Moody. “We look forward to building on the market’s excellence from the last several years and boosting traffic for local businesses, while making Downtown Mt. Pleasant a vibrant community destination.”

Michigan Street will be closed to traffic one block east of Main Street on Saturdays from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.  Parking is available in the south west parking lot of Michigan and Main streets.

Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) recipients can use their Michigan Bridge Card at the Mt. Pleasant Farmers’ Market. The market also accepts debit and credit cards, Double Up Food Bucks, WIC Project FRESH and Senior Project FRESH/Market FRESH coupons.

The Thursday Farmers’ Market will begin on June 7 and will remain at Island Park. Thursday Market hours are 7:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Back to the Bricks® car show stops downtown Mt. Pleasant June 8

The Back to the Bricks® car show will be making its first stop of the season in downtown Mt. Pleasant on Friday, June 8, as part of its “Mighty Mac and Back” promo tour. From 5 to 8:30 p.m., classic car owners and admirers can enjoy more than 270 automobiles on display along the streets of downtown.

Back to the Bricks® produces family-friendly automotive events that reflect Flint’s automotive heritage. The six-day tour is designed to promote all of the Back to the Bricks® events while showcasing each participating city’s unique features and foster economic development.

The following streets will be closed from 2 to 8:30 p.m. on June 8:

  • Broadway between Lansing and Washington
  • Main between Illinois and Mosher
  • University between Mosher and Michigan
  • Court between Broadway and Mosher
  • Franklin between Mosher and Michigan

The tour will leave from Davison with overnight stops in Mt. Pleasant, Gaylord, Petoskey, St. Ignace, and East Tawas, culminating with an “End of the Road” Luncheon at the Birch Run Speedway & Event Center.

Nominations for Historic Preservation Improvement Awards due March 31

The City of Mt. Pleasant’s Historic District Commission (HDC) is currently seeking nominations for the 2018 Historic Preservation Improvement Awards.

The awards are presented each year to honor exterior improvements of residential and commercial properties in the City of Mt. Pleasant in four areas – Preservation, Restoration, New Construction or Downtown Historic District Choice. Nominated properties must be at least 25 years old, and the improvements must have been completed between Jan. 1 and Dec. 31, 2017.

The HDC will evaluate applications that best reflect the Secretary of Interior’s Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties. Winners will be announced in May as part of National Historic Preservation month.

Nominations are due by 4:30 p.m. on March 31, 2018. Nomination forms can be found on the City’s website at http://www.mt-pleasant.org/boards_and_commissions/HDC.asp.

Annual Downtown Mt. Pleasant Open House scheduled for Sept. 29-30

Residents and visitors are invited to the third annual Fall Open House downtown Mt. Pleasant for a weekend full of festivities! On Sept. 29 and 30, several downtown businesses will offer customers samples, specials and great coupons for future deals from local retailers, restaurants and eateries.

The following businesses will have a unique offering during the Fall Open House: Art Reach of Mid Michigan, GreenTree Co-op, Trillium, Pure Vitality, Basketree, Le Fleur Boutique, Headliners Salon, Pleasant City Coffee, Motorless Motion, Redbloom Yoga, and Gray’s Furniture & Accessories. ‘Super Soaker Festivus’ to take place tonight at Island Park

Untitled design (12).pngThe “Super Soaker Festivus” community water gun fight will take place tonight at Island Park. The event will officially start at 6:30 p.m., but participants may arrive beginning at 6 p.m.

Bring water blasters, soakers and cannons to this family-fun event! Large buckets of water will be available for refueling. Plus, four lucky participants will win a Super Aqua Blaster Soaker 1500!

Presented by Downtown Mt. Pleasant, Isabella Community Credit Union and WCFX, the “Super Soaker Festivus” is the final event of the City’s Thrilling Thursdays series.
