Double Stabbing Suspect Arrested

Through intense investigation, the Mt. Pleasant Police Department identified a suspect from a May 6, 2023 double stabbing assault which occurred in the vicinity of Broomfield and Mission Street in Mt. Pleasant. This incident resulted in a male victim suffering stab wounds to the chest, and a female victim sustaining stab wounds to the back area.

The Mt. Pleasant and Bay City Police Departments, alongside Bay City’s ELITE VIPER UNIT – a covert taskforce team, conducted interviews and surveillance in Bay City, Michigan. Probable cause was established, and an arrest warrant was obtained from the Isabella County Prosecutors Office.   

Upon search warrants being executed, a 23-year-old Bay City man was arrested by the ELITE VIPER UNIT on a two-count warrant for Assault with Intent to Murder. 

This is an ongoing and open investigation. The name of the arrested individual will be withheld until after arraignment.  

The two assault victims have been released from the hospital. The names of the victims will not be released until the investigation is closed.

The Mt. Pleasant Police Department was assisted by the Bay City Police Department, the ELITE VIPER UNIT, Central Michigan University Police, Isabella County Sheriff’s Department, Michigan State Police, Saginaw Chippewa Tribal Police, Isabella County Central Dispatch, Isabella County Prosecutors Office and the Wayside Bar.

Mt. Pleasant Police Respond to Stabbing – No Risk to the Public

At approximately 12:40 a.m. on May 6, 2023 officers of the Mt. Pleasant Police Department were dispatched to a local hospital to meet with victims of a stabbing assault. A male victim suffered stab wounds to the chest, and a female victim sustained stab wounds to the back area. Both individuals are in stable condition.

This incident occurred in the vicinity of Broomfield and Mission Streets. Police interviewed several witnesses who described a physical altercation between several males. The injured female tried to intervene, resulting in her stab wounds.  

Police have determined the parties involved do not live in this area, or have any connections to the community. It is believed the suspects are no longer in the area, and there is no risk to the public.

Doug Lobsinger Named Mt. Pleasant Fire Chief

Paul Lauria, Director of Public Safety for the City of Mt. Pleasant, announced the appointment of Doug Lobsinger to Fire Chief of the Mt. Pleasant Fire Department. Doug has served in this leadership role in an interim capacity since the retirement of Rick Beltinck in December 2022.

Close to 30 years ago, Doug joined the Mt. Pleasant Fire Department as a Paid On Call Firefighter. He has since risen through the ranks serving as an Equipment Operator, Sergeant and Assistant Fire Chief, before his recent interim Fire Chief assignment.

Director Lauria shared, “Through the decades, Doug has been an EMS Coordinator and Instructor, NFPA Fire Inspector, a member of the Hazmat and Technical Rescue Team, and a member of the Isabella County Medical Control Board.” He added, “Throughout his tenure, Doug has steered the Neighborhood Resource Unit, as well as administered the MHSDA housing grant program. This home exterior improvement program has completed 27 projects to date.”

Director Lauria concluded, “Doug’s enthusiasm for fire safety and code enforcement will continue to serve our fire department and community well.”

Mt. Pleasant Youth Police Academy Accepting Applications

The Youth Services Police Academy is scheduled for July 10 – 27, 2023, (Monday – Thursday) from 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. This free program offers youth, going into grades 6-8 who have an interest in law enforcement, an up-close view of the skills and necessary training needed for law enforcement officials.

Mt. Pleasant Police Officers conduct the program in the manner of a real police academy with values such as teamwork, integrity, compassion and discipline being stressed. Cadets are required to participate in physical training and complete the same agility tests given to recruits during a standard police academy.

In addition to physical training, the daily curriculum includes: hands-on learning, field trips and demonstrations by specialized units such as the SWAT Team, K-9 and DNR. Classroom topics encompass crime scene investigations, traffic stops, marine patrol activities, defensive driving techniques, firearms safety, first aid and CPR, and much more.

Applications are now available at Mt. Pleasant Public Schools and the Division of Public Safety, 804 E. High Street, during 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. The application deadline is June 2, 2023.

City to Offer No Fee Brush Chipping

UPDATE: April 24, 11a.m. – All 150 slots have been filled.

The City is offering 150 households, within the City limits, up to 30 minutes of no fee brush chipping during the week of May 8, 2023. Brush chipping will be completed at curbside only, no alleys. Reservations will be accepted beginning April 24 at 8:00 a.m. until April 28 at 4:30 p.m., or until all spots are filled.
