2018 Initial Fall Leaf Collection Pick Up Information

Due to the drought like conditions this past summer, some trees are beginning to shed their leaves earlier than usual. Residents are reminded to not rake leaves into the streets until the week of October 22. Leaf piles can block and clog storm water catch basins.  Raking leaves into the streets this far ahead of the scheduled collection should be avoided.

Residents who wish to rake their yards ahead of the City’s collection schedule may bag and dispose of the leaves for a fee at the Material Recovery Facility, located at 4208 E. River Rd., Mt. Pleasant.  Leaves may also be mulched with a mulching lawnmower.

The City’s leaf collection schedule is as follows:

  • Week of October 22: Residents to rake leaves into low piles, taking care not to cover catch basins.
  • Week of October 29: Staff will collect leaves in a City-wide sweep.
  • Week of November 5: Residents to rake leaves into low piles, taking care not to cover catch basins.
  • Week of November 12: Staff will collect leaves in a City-wide sweep.
  • Week of November 19: Residents to rake leaves into low piles, taking care not to cover catch basins.
  • November 26-28: Final collection of leaves in a city-wide sweep. Any leaves left in the street after the crews have made their final pass will not be collected and are the responsibility of the homeowner.

Residents are asked to rake leaves into low piles and take caution so that leaves do not cover catch basins or are placed too far out in the street so as to cause a traffic obstruction.  On High and Pickard Streets, where high traffic volume prohibits leaves in the gutter, residents should rake the leaves onto the rights-of-way, between the curb and sidewalk.  Residents who live on any other streets other than High and Pickard should rake leaves into low piles in the street gutter.  Yard waste bags should not be used this collection is for leaves only.  Leaf piles must not contain garden or shrubbery clippings, dead grass, branches, trim board or other material.

PLEASE NOTE: that during leaf pick up weeks City staff makes one sweep through the entire City.  It is suggested that leaves be raked to the curb before Monday of pick up weeks.

Approved and conducted a closed session pursuant to subsection 8(c) of the Open Meetings Act for strategy and negotiation of a collective bargaining agreement.

Conducted a work session discussion regarding setting the Medical Marihuana Application deadline.

Staying informed on City government has become even more convenient.

City offering no fee brush chipping – WE ARE NO LONGER ACCEPTING RESERVATIONS, THE SCHEDULE IS FULL as of 9/12/18.

As of 9/12/18:  We are no longer taking reservations.  The schedule is full. 

The City is offering up to 150 households 30 minutes of no fee brush chipping during the week of Sept. 24. The service is first come, first served, and residents must make a reservation by contacting the Division of Public Works no later than 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, September 20, 2018. Registration can be completed online, in person or by calling Public Works at (989) 779-5401.

Brush chipping will be performed once per address at no cost for a period of up to 30 minutes. Residents may not transfer a portion of the 30-minute maximum to another resident. If residents have more brush than what can be chipped within the allotted 30 minutes, they have the option of being billed $1.82 per minute for each additional minute, or, at the time the reservation is made, can request crews stop at 30 minutes.

Residents must adhere to the City’s regular brush chipping guidelines. A letter outlining the guidelines will be sent to registrants in advance. Brush chipping will be completed at curbside only. No chipping will occur in the alleys.

After the completion of the no fee program, the City will offer brush chipping services for a fee. Residents may also take yard waste and brush to the Isabella County Materials Recovery Facility at 4208 East River Road.

City Commission Meetings to Begin at 7 p.m.

Starting September 10, 2018 the regular meetings of the Mt. Pleasant City Commission will begin at 7:00 p.m. at City Hall.

The City Commission meets the second and fourth Monday of the month in the City Commission Chambers at Mt. Pleasant City Hall, 320 W. Broadway in Mt. Pleasant. Commission work sessions and special meetings are scheduled as needed.

Meetings can also be viewed live on Channel 188. The meetings are rebroadcast (for two weeks following the meeting) daily at noon, as well as Friday and Saturday at 8 p.m., or can be viewed on the MAC TV website at www.mactvnetwork.org.

Mt. Pleasant, Mich. – This past weekend, thousands of student residents arrived to the area for the start of the fall semester at Central Michigan University. The Mt. Pleasant Police Department responded to several calls for service and generated a number of citations from 7 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 23 to 7 a.m. on Sunday, Aug. 26. In 2014, the City of Mt. Pleasant developed a multi-year plan to address the history of violations and increasing tension among residents in the neighborhood north of Central Michigan University’s campus where owner-occupied properties and student rentals are intermingled. To decrease disruptive behavior and improve relationships between the full and part-year residents, City officials have worked to improve partnerships with local landlords, CMU and its students, as well as enforce ordinances on a more consistent basis.

“We are proud to be home to Central Michigan University. The students are a great asset to our community and the energy and diversity they bring strengthens the City as a whole,” said Mt.Pleasant City Manager Nancy Ridley. “The students are also City residents, and all residents are expected to uphold our community standards, which include respecting your neighbors and taking care of each other to ensure Mt. Pleasant continues to be a safe and desirable place to live and visit.”

North Main Street (Pickard to Lincoln) Closed on Wednesday, August 29 at 5 p.m.

UPDATE: Due to the rain on Friday, August 24, 2018 – the paving of Main Street from Pickard Street to Lincoln Street will now take place on Wednesday, August 29 starting at 5 p.m.

North Main Street residents are advised to move their vehicles out of driveways and off of North Main Street by 4 p.m. on Wednesday, August 29. On-street parking on North Main Street will not be allowed. Parking is available on the side streets. Cars parked on side streets will not be ticketed during the road work project.

Post Office Access:

Please visit the Post Office before 4 p.m. on Wednesday, August 29 since there will be limited to no access after 4 p.m.

Island Park Access:

Residents may still enter Island Park coming from the south (downtown area) on Wednesday after 4 p.m.
