EGLE’s Water Service Line Verification Underway

The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) revised the lead and copper rule for community drinking water, requiring municipalities to gather and update water service line material information for all structures connected to the distribution system. This has been an ongoing project for the City of Mt. Pleasant’s Water Department.

Starting the week of May 16, 2022 material verification will take place north of Broadway Street and west of Harris Street. During this process the water department will be digging down to the water service in the right of way. Once the water line material is identified (likely plastic or copper) the area will be backfilled and restored with topsoil and seed. Water service will not be interrupted. Households in future verification areas throughout the city will be notified with door hangars as the time draws closer.

This work is being funded by a grant from the State of Michigan and insures compliance with the state’s lead and copper rule. Although the city does not know of any lead services that currently exist in the water distribution system, this process will verify the current inventory. If you have any questions about this process please call the Division of Public Works at 989-779-5400.
