Sidewalk Snow & Ice Removal Reminder

As winter weather settles in, the City of Mt. Pleasant is asking residents to help keep our community safe and accessible for everyone.

Clear sidewalks play a major role in making it possible for neighbors, students, mail carriers, and visitors to move through town safely. Owners and occupants of properties within the City are responsible for clearing the public sidewalks that adjoin their property.

To support safe travel throughout the community, follow these winter sidewalk guidelines:

Sidewalks should be cleared of snow and ice within 24 hours after snowfall, including spaces around mailbox approaches.

This expectation applies even in areas where the City later clears sidewalks.

Keeping sidewalks free of ice and snow reduces falls, supports school routes, and helps maintain accessibility for everyone who relies on walking as a primary mode of transportation.

If sidewalks remain uncleared, the City may issue a civil infraction or perform the clearing, with associated costs billed to the property. These measures are in place to help maintain a safe environment for the whole community.

UPDATE: (2/15/2025 at 3 p.m.) – The Snow Emergency has been cancelled, due to the change in forecast. Plow crews will be out tonight and early tomorrow morning to clear the roads.

Due to the significant winter weather forecast, the City of Mt. Pleasant has declared a Snow Emergency. All vehicles must be removed from the streets by 5 p.m. on Saturday, February 15, 2025, so crews can safely and effectively clear the roadways.

Failure to remove vehicles from the street will result in a ticket. Towing may be utilized if ticketing has proven ineffective and/or the vehicles parked on the street cause a delay in snow removal.

Snow Emergencies and Downtown Overnight Parking Information

If a snow emergency is declared by City staff, on-street parking will NOT be permitted.

Sidewalk Snow Plowing Reminders

Sidewalk snowplowing by City staff does not start until the City streets, alleys and parking lots have been cleared. City staff snowplows 25 miles of residential sidewalk, no salt is used.

For those residential sidewalks not currently being plowed by City staff, please keep the safety of your family and neighbors in mind and remove the snow from your sidewalk and mailbox approach as soon as practical after inclement weather.

For Commercial and Industrial Property Owners: City ordinance requires commercial and industrial property owners to clear sidewalks within 18 hours after sleet, freezing rain or snow stops falling, with the exception of Sundays and holidays (Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day, New Year’s Day). In this case, snow must be cleared by noon the day following the Sunday or holiday. If the snow or ice is too hard to remove, the owner must spread enough sand or other abrasive material to make travel safe and as soon as weather permits, and must clear a path of at least 48 inches in width.
